Budgie "scaly face disease" what is treatment as local pet stores have no Idea what this is..?

Common Diseases: Scaly face disease - This is caused by Cnemodocoptes mites. These mites cause scales to appear on the affected area, usually the face, cere, eyelids and legs, and can cause beak deformities. what is the treatment for this

Budgie "scaly face disease" what is treatment as local pet stores have no Idea what this is..?
an old and simple tratment is a mineral oil applied to the scale area. a vegetable oil will work as well.

The idea is that the oil layer will kill the mites because thy cant breathe. You need to do it at least daily for several weeks. Keep doing it after the scale disappears to make sure any mite eggs are killed.

There are more modern mite treatments from the pet store.
Reply:Never use petrolium jelly/vaseline on your bird. It is toxic.

The treatments from the vet work well, take your bird in to be seen. If all else fails, you can purchase Scatt online. It will also kill the mites, but needs to be administered on the skin and by weight of the bird.

Scaley face mites are very painful and can cause deformaties if not treated, so please, get your birdie to the vet ASAP.

Reply:The most effective treatments for Scaly Face or Leg mite infestations are Avomectin, Ivermectin or Moxidectin which can only be prescribed by your veterinary surgeon.

In the past many other treatments have been used but are less effective. Most of these preparations are a mixture of benzyl benzoate and paraffin oil. One recommendation is to use such a product daily for three days, and repeat this three times with two weeks between each treatment.

Another way to treat the condition by rubbing petroleum jelly or paraffin oil on the beak, the cere, and the legs of the budgerigars on a daily basis. While this does not directly kill the mite, it is thought that it causes them to suffocate.
Reply:Take your bird to the vet, there are so called treatments at petstores, but they do not work. Save yourself the time and agrivation and simply take the bird to the vet. Mites are hard to get rid of without vet treatment, because they lay eggs(so you "smother" some and more hatch) you'll never get rid of them.

Beak, and skin deformaties can be perminent. If your birds beak begins to grow out of control you'll be at the vet once a month to get it trimmed, and that'll cost more than two or three mite treatments.
